A little bit traditional Zimbabwean folk, a little bit Caribbean bop, and a little bit pop, Nyamamusango appealingly translates mbira music via marimbas. The results are tuneful and hold much of the feather-light, effervescent beauty of the original Shona music.
Nyamamusango Marimba Ensemble
Music from Zimbabwe
The Group
Nyamamusango has been busy busking, performing & having fun on the streets, in markets, city parks & at functions around Ontario since summer 2000. We play Marimba & Mbira Music from Zimbabwe. Current members include Dawne, Tim, Laird, Madeline, Dan, Juanita, Chaka, Tawanda, Shadrick and Raphael on Percussion. Nyamamusango is the name of a song we play. Behind the song is a story that teaches a lesson in survival. Nyamamusango translates literally as "Meat in the Forest."
Our Music
Some say the music relaxes & others find it energizing. Listeners cant help but be moved. Children just cant sit still & insist on trying! The sound is definitely unique - weve been compared to pipe organs, waterfalls & woodwinds. We perform modern compositions & traditional songs transcribed from Mbira.
Most of our members also play Mbira. The Mbira Dzavadzimu ("Mbira of the Ancestors") dates back many centuries with the Shona of Zimbabwe. Traditionally used in ceremony, Mbiras are now part of popular culture.
Performances
Let us bring energy, excitement & interactivity to your next function. We are available for events of all sorts & sizes. Perfect for outdoor functions, we require little set-up time & no sound system - just a space to play.
