Equal parts preschool lullaby, cockeyed mashup of Elvis Costello and Moz, and swingin' London acid test, the typical Patrick Wolf song is, shall we say, not for the faint of pop. But in the end, the goofing on xylophones is only what makes Wolf fun. The deftness of melody is what makes him good.
The Magic Position is Patrick Wolf’s third release and grandest effort to date, combining his love for early twentieth century electronics with orchestral strings, handclap-like drums, and his Morrissey- esque baritone. The album’s been eagerly anticipated on both sides of the Atlantic spurred by a promotional remix of Mika’s “Love Today,” a slot on Arcade Fire’s UK tour, and a duet of Prince’s “When Doves Cry” with Charlotte Church. But this is one album where it pays to believe the hype. The Magic Position is everything we love about a great pop album: heartfelt, bold, and not at all pretentious. “…one of Britain’s most appealing young singer-songwriters…a canny and uncanny performer who has long seemed destined for pop stardom” – Kalefa Sanneh, The New York Times “the upbeat springtime romp "Get Lost", the danceable, triumphant "Accident and Emergency", and the celebratory title track…show an entirely new side of Wolf…impeccable pop songcraft” – Pitchfork “Wolf's joy is contagious…and there's nothing remotely not awesome about him.” – Rollingstone.com
