Ian Clark is the one-man electro guru behind Detroit project Perspects. He takes an '80s revival approach in cobbling his electro-pop rhythms, which have shown up on acclaimed releases for labels like Ghostly International, Ersatz Audio, and Suction. He warps synth-like vocals and transforms audio signals while the drums clatter underneath. It's a danceable intensity--you'll find it impossible to not move.
In His Own Words
Perspects is a project of Detroit-based musician, producer and multimedia artist Ian Clark. He is best known for his work on Detroit's influential Ersatz Audio label, where he has released music as Lesseninglesson, as a founding member of Le Car, and as Perspects. Recent releases include the Third and Final Report of Perspects EP on Interdimensional Transmissions (I.T.) in early 2003, and the single "They Keep Dancing" from Ghostly International's Tangent 2002: Disco Nouveau, done with vocalist Mark Erwin and featured prominently on DJ Hell's React mix CD Electronicbody-Housemusic. A comprehensive Perspects CD is also forthcoming on I.T.
The Perspects sound is punchy, analog synthpop with brooding vocals and live percussive elements. Though the early synth influences are apparent, the music is in no way retro or revivalist. Perspects does not align itself with any of the current trends in electronic/dance culture, and takes inspiration from a wide, often unlikely, range of sources.
