Editor's review

Peven Everett is not your typical artist. Not only is he a writer, vocalist, and producer, but he also plays 11 instruments professionally, including all of the instruments and vocals on his debut album "Studio Confessions," which dropped on ABB Soul in 2003.

Biography

There is a whole spectrum of things that make up the man and artist known as Peven Everett. He is a worldly and celebrated artist whose love affair with music has spawned a style solely his own. He is not a jazz artist, nor is he house artist but rather a multifaceted producer, writer, vocalist, performer, and a multi-instrumentalist playing. He plays 11 instruments professionally, including guitar, keys, drums, bass, trombone, flute, and saxophone as well as being a renowned trumpeter.

Born in Harvey, IL, a small suburb next door to Chicago, Peven first started showing an interest in music at a very tender age. He received his very first drum kit at the age of 4 from his mother who, a vocalist herself, has stood behind her son and his passion. At the age of 17, Berklee College of Music recognized the raw talent Peven possessed by giving him a full scholarship. Shortly thereafter, he hit the road with jazz giants like Betty Carter, and Wynton and Branford Marsalis. After a few years of touring and playing gigs at legendary clubs – Yoshi’s, Basil’s, and Blue Note to name a few - across the country, returned to Harvey in 1998 to full throttle his musical career.

Aside from performing and recording with a number of jazz artists (he played trumpet on Curtis Lundy’s latest album), he also started recording deep house records with collaborative efforts on timeless cuts like “Gabriel” and “Watch Them Come.” Peven’s solo styling and live shows are also as remarkable as the music he creates: he is a daring and versatile singer who performs with his live band Séance Divine, together they create a vibe that many have called a religious experience. “You never know exactly what you will get from Peven when you see him live but you can count on it being an amazing experience not to be forgotten” says ABB Records founder and president, Beni B.

In early 2003, Peven teamed up with Bay Area indie label ABB Record's newly formed imprint ABB Soul – http://www.abbrecords.com/abbsoul. This collaboration birthed Peven's first soul-inspired full-length release entitled Studio Confessions, a 10-track album, featuring all production, arrangement, and performance by Peven himself. Studio Confessions offers an emotional, organic, and intimate look at Harvey's soul child as he shares snapshots of his life with the listener. The album is best described as complex in structure yet soothing and simple in sound. Blessed with a pleasant and dynamic voice, Peven delivers songs with passion and energy comparable to Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, and Prince. Through his lyrics, Peven's objective is to not only be understood, but to impart his emotion and intensity to his audience while exploring and pushing musical boundaries. “I refuse to make music if I’m not going to be innovative” states Peven. At 29 he is creative beyond imagination, and a genius - and we take that word seriously.
