Editor's review

Northern California's Wide Hive label appears determined to make funk in every possible stripe--be it dark and vibey or pocked with deep hip-hop beats or flitting with jazz licks. PFKS, which stars the Crown City rhythm keepers, is of the first sort: deep, sultry, and brimming with cool.

Biography

Is it instrumental hip-hop or hard-hitting jazz? Critics agree that Plate Fork Knife Spoon is carving out its own brand of music. Born from the critically acclaimed Crown City Rockersrhythm section: Kat Ouano (keyboards), Headnodic (bass/producer) and Max MacVeety (drums), Plate Fork Knife Spoon debuts its self-titled release on San Francisco based Wide Hive Records.

The Bay Area based rhythm section lays down a firm foundation for the albums guest performers, Soulive guitarist Eric Krasno, The Broun Fellinis saxophonist David Boyce and fellow Crown City Rocker emcee, Raashan Ahmad.

What happens when you combine trained musicians from the world-renowned Berklee School of Music in Boston, with an articulate emcee and breathtaking beat-wizard? A genre blending hip-hop and crossover jazz collective whose music is original, powerful and provocative all in the same breath.

With an organic blend of lush, funk-drenched grooves, sharp live instrumentation and a touch of old-school inflected soul, Plate Fork Knife Spoon is a welcome breath of fresh air in today's commercially cluttered hip-hop cosmos. This ensemble boldly follows in the storied footsteps of such pioneers as The Roots, De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest.

Available on CD, LP, and 12" ("Wonder"). "Wonder" is only available on CD and 12". The Wonder12" also contains an exclusive beat, "Sabado."

"Trying to break the cycle of hypocrisy and monotonous stereotypes within hip hop, all along the way the magic of the music still supports a guaranteed head-nod, backspin or record scratch." Rolling Stone

"A jazzy hip-hop album that outshines its peers" URB
