Weird, nasally vocals theatrically creep behind cheeky electronic production that would probably sound great as the soundtrack to a colorful B movie. If James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem all of a sudden decided he was moving to Mexico and taking up rapping, the stuff you'd hear him play in little coffeehouses and bodegas would sound exactly like this.
The Orchard is releasing three refreshing albums this summer. First up is an LP debut from Project Jenny, Project Jan. This Brooklyn keyboard/vocal duo got quite a bit of attention after the release of their first self-titled EP in 2005.
Project Jenny, Project Jan fuses together eclectic sounds of Latin, old school hip-hop, and reggae, to blues, rock, old time rags, and 80s electro. Hints of bluegrass, big band and swing enhance the versatile nature of the music. So what exactly is this sound categorized as? The band’s signature sound - Sammy Rubin’s jaunty electro-pop hooks fueled by saucy freestyled vocals from Jeremy Haines - is infectious without being predictable. Call it what you will, but the bottom line is that this is smart, energetic dance music for a new generation of listeners—the kind of people who’d rather shake it on the dance floor than puzzle over subgenres. Once you get a serving of Project Jenny, Project Jan, you’ll be hoping for more hugs and kisses. The album will make its debut in stores on August 14, but eMusic fans can purchase it as early as August 7.
