Orlando trio Quasitone makes contemporary fusion that never sacrifices a sensitive earthiness for the sake of sheer spectral grandeur. Melding high-octane guitar, drums, and Chapman Stick, the group achieves a luminous prog-jazz, post-Weather Report vibe that's bolstered by strong chops all around, and the addition of world beat percussion lends a humanizing touch.
Quasitone is a trio comprised of 3 adventurous musicians walking the razors edge of fusion and Prog with a bit of World and Post Rock sensibilities thrown in for good measure. The music is an infectious groove of subtle nuances and sheer chops while maintaining a deep respect for melody and harmony.Guitar,Drums, and Chapman Stick (and even some Native American Flute) come together in an equal partnership to create some of the most daring and fresh instrumental music to emerge in a long time. Having met and played together at a local Orlando jam night, guitarist Mario Ticlea and Stickist/bassist Juan Leon struck a musical friendship and found that they were sonically simpatico.Mario introduced Juan to percussionist Reed Hayes and the 3 got together at yet another jam night and immediately turned heads and dropped jaws. The 3 decided that the powerful trio was something worth pursuing and began collaborating soon after. The music is as diverse as the guys themselves... Mario has amassed an impressive array of chops and speed on both electric and acoustic guitars, freted or fretless, conventional and MIDI.An instructor with studio/stage experience,Mario is a force to be reckoned with who is armed with a concise understanding of harmony and melody. Reed comes from a touring environment which has taken him to the far reaches of the states and abroad. As drummer for the band "2112" and "Toronto Airport",(Rush tribute),Reed has explored every nook and cranny of his instruments, and mastered them.A constant musical figure in the Central Florida area,he now makes his musical home with Quasitone. Juan started playing bass over 20 yrs ago and was heavily influenced by the likes of John Entwhistle,Geddy Lee,and Stanley Clarke. He got the jazz bug when a friend turned him on to 70s fusion greats Mahavishnu Orchestra and Weather Report. He picked up the Chapman Stick in 2003 after hearing Trey Gunn's "One Thousand Years".
