Editor's review

Alternately fragile and fierce, empowered and mopey, this Rochester MC's voice tells his story in advance of his lyrics. That it's a tragically familiar one is his challenge, and Raks meets it head on, employing sweeping orchestral effects and his own emotional pliability to re-open old wounds.

Biography

A Breath of Fresh Air

Thats a rather bold statement, right? Inhale. In an industry saturated with negativity and violence, where wordplay has been replaced with gunplay, and exaggerated stories of crack sales take precedence over reality, it can be hard to breathe. Exhale. Suffocating, isn't it?

A Breath of Fresh Air

Emilio Rojas (aka Raks One) is just that. No stranger to struggle or hard times, this Rochester, New York native combines personal experience, with witty, conscious lyrics to create music that people can both relate to and be inspired by.

You've heard his story thousands of times before: His father disappears, and leaves his mother behind to raise his kids. It is a personal history far too common in todays world, but it is told with elegance and a new, unique perspective that captivates everyone from the die hard hiphop fan, to the casual listener.

It is a story that can take a piece of anyones heart.

At age 10 Emilio began his relationship with music as a means of coming to terms with his own life. He started by playing the drums, and later, at 13, he transferred his rhythmic prowess into writing. His musical background has no doubt shaped his lyrics, and that can be seen by examining the structures and cadences of his rhymes.

His current release, A Breath of Fresh Air, is the culmination of his personal history, abundant creativity, social awareness, intelligence, and ability on the mic. It introduces him as a man who seeks not only to identify his issues and the issues we all struggle with, but also to conquer them. Highlights include Keep on Runnin, an in depth social commentary in which Emilio assesses the problems we all face, and Life Ain't Fair, an intensely personal song describing a boy whos absentee father attempts to make amends.

Inhale. Listen to the music. Exhale. Refreshing, isnt it?
