When guitarist Brynjar Boe was promised a gig for his band at the student-
festival in Oslo Aug. 2002, he got into a dilemma. The band in wich he played
was a little bit "out of tune" at the moment, and wasn't able to perform. But he
really wanted to play that gig anyway, so he had to come up with a new band
for the occation. He started writing some music with his friend and musician
Mads Friberg, and little by little it started to develop into songs. The music
was inspired by ambient and electronica, and they had in mind a female singer
to perform the songs.
Also, It was in the greatest interest to them adding
string-players to the group, and eventually, a bass-player and a drummer. Red
Stone Cherub performed for the first time at Oslo studentfestival the 28 th of
august 2002, and the stage was filled up with eight musicians, cellis,
rainsticks, computers, and some other funny stuff. During the concert, even a
cake-lottery was taking place.. After that concert, some of the members left
while new were added to the group. Going into a long period of reherseals,
identity-crisis, long discussions, recordings, trying to find the right sound,
and a lot of nice moments as well, Red Stone Cherub started developing into
something new.
The band became less of a world/ambient orchestra, and
more of an experimental pop-orchestra with elements of classical and jazz
represented. In september 2003, Red Stone Cherub played their second
concert at a small festival called b-festivalen, at the student hang-out place;
Chateau neuf, in Oslo. At that gig, producer Simon Poole heard Red Stone
Cheruba for the first time, and offered them to produce a demo-recording for
them at the studio in wich he was attached, "gjokeredet" or "the nest". The
band immediately liked the idea, and throughout february, they recorded the
songs "mechanical","Safe Hurting", and "Meticulous Fashion".
Red Stone Cherub is currently playing gigs in Oslo, always experimenting with
new sounds and new approaches.
