Editor's review

Like a bright-red evening sky, the electronic music of Los Angeles sound designer and Sentrall Records label owner Rollmottle is fuzzy, warm, and airy. Pieced together from multiple layers of synthetic beats, Rollmottle's minimalist compositions are sentient sonic excursions that come packed with positive energy.

Biography

Rollmottle's lush sound reflects his tendency towards the atmospheric and spacious. He attributes this leaning to the pervasive Southern California environment where bright sun and vast blue skies inspire a sound that is warm and wide.

Rollmottle has continually developed his warm sound by dipping his hand in everything from rock to house to techno. Raised on the tinny audio of AM oldies and reborn on the hypnotic sounds of experimental and independent rock, Rollmottle has a soft spot for distorted sounds, drones, and inharmonic melodies. He also cites inspiration from sources as disparate as Tangerine Dream's synth madness to the Fleetwood Mac "coke-on-the-console" (as he calls it) style mega-productions of 70s studio rock.

Rollmottle's songs reflect a complex synthesis of these inspirations. He firmly believes there is invaluable musical knowledge in "consulting the masters." His sometimes intricate production techniques are informed by obsessively listening to the music in his large collection. He is as likely to recall Brian Eno as he is Brian Wilson as the source of a technique or approach. Rollmottle says that his utter fixation with sound science and the technical side of production have added yet another layer to his process. He says, "I'm always finding new things to try and that's what keeps me coming back for more."

Rollmottle is owner and operator of SENTRALL Records in Los Angeles, California.
