If we compare upfront drum 'n' bass to a pitbull, "deep" drum 'n' bass--like this presented by RorShak--is a neutered golden retriever puppy. But that's not necessarily a bad thing--it's just got all the bite of regular DNB without the bark. A partnership between established DNB producers DB and Stakka, RorShak's kicks stab just as deep, its percussion just as complex, but when it comes to bass, consider it DNB-lite. The focus instead is on the melody and vocals (see: High Contrast, London Elektricity)--original sin to genre purists. If you like the idea of DNB but want to avoid the headache, try on some RorShak.
Ror-Shak was formed in 2004 and is fronted by artists DB and Stakka, both of whom have over 20 years experience in the industry. The group’s first effort, a dance floor tune called “Groupies,” was released by Breakbeat Science, and has become quite sought after since going out of print.
Ror-Shak's forthcoming album, Deep, is something that all music lovers will find enjoyable and exciting. It explores styles ranging from broken beats, down tempo, and soulful chill to electronic, elegant, and cool jazz. Deep features a number of tracks that have vocals from Julee Cruise, Chantal Claret, Lisa Shaw, and Mark Holmes. Ror-Shak’s sound is rooted in drum & bass, and is interesting and exciting for both the casual listener and the true dance heads. This album took over a year to complete due to Stakka's incredible attention to detail.
