Editor's review

She's got a great country name, but that's only a minor detail from this former Mekons' eclectic arsenal. She started at nineteen with an improvised film score--aided by Buzzcock Pete Shelley--and continued with a band that genre-bent by nature. Now Timms has completed an alluringly spooky roots-rock set.

Biography

Sally Timms is best known for her long involvement with the Mekons, whom she joined in 1986. She recorded her first solo album, Hangahar (an experimental, improvised film score), at the age of nineteen, with Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks. She has released several other solo CDs, including a country album on Bloodshot, Cowboy Sally’s Twilight Laments for Lost Buckaroos, in 1998.

For her most recent release, In the World of Him, Sally recorded with Johnny Dowd and his band in Ithaca, NY over the course of several sessions during 2003. She had been collecting these songs for several years, the developing theme being songs written by men and sung from their perspective. They cover war, marriage, abandonment, and the inability to articulate, and range from the apologetic to the analytical. Songs were written by Ryan Adams, Mark Eitzel, Kevin Coyne, Johnny Dowd, Mekons, Jon Langford and Sean Garrison.
