The Brooklyn soul-funk label's new remix album offers something that more of its type should: a chance to get the new takes and originals right next to each other. Hearing, say, "Take It Come" have its soul grooves broken into postmodern beats proves a great window on the creative process.
Scion presents "Scion CD Sampler ¨C Volume 19, Daptone Records Remixed," a double CD special edition compilation of club-ready remixes pulling from the expansive catalog of Brooklyn-based, independent, funk and soul label, Daptone Records. The remixes are collected side-by-side with the dazzling Daptone originals that inspired them. This release is a continuation of Scion's championing of independent thought and progressive urban culture through music-based initiatives.
Scion's commitment to artistic expression provides a platform for passionate musicians to focus on developing their art and exploring endless possibilities. Scion Audio/Visual (A/V), its in-house record label, promotes MCs and bands through a creative series of promotionally distributed 12¡å vinyl and CD releases that have spanned the gamut of hip-hop, funk, soul, reggae, world, and electronic music. GZA, Raekwon, Big Daddy Kane, and Spank Rock are among the exceptional modern musical talents who have contributed to the burgeoning Scion A/V catalog.
In this CD Sampler, producers, remixers and MCs such as Mark Ronson, Hank Shocklee (Bomb Squad, Public Enemy), Mad Professor, Large Professor (Main Source), DJ Spinna, Kenny Dope (Masters At Work), Wale, Ticklah, and Cool Calm Pete re-work some of the most soulful songs released in this millennium by Daptone Records groups Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, The Budos Band, The Daktaris, and The Sugarman Three & Co. While the remixes serve up a mashed up soup of soul food for the ears, Daptone's classic sound proves itself just as worthy of the dance floor today as ever. The collection creates a common ground for music lovers old and young to unite, drop all pretenses and preconceptions, and just enjoy the excitement of music that moves the heart and the feet.
Daptone Records has gained an international reputation for its steady output of incredible funk and soul music that defies pre-conceived notions of musical eras, while continuing in the rich traditions of American soul music as propagated by legendary labels like Motown and Stax. So much so, in fact, that CNN and MTV have recently visited the label's humble home recording studio deep in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY, to investigate the time machine that produces the unique Daptone sound. Artists such as Kanye West, Jay-Z and Amy Winehouse, have re-appropriated the Daptone sound to give their own music the raw funk snap and deep soulful agility that is inimitably Daptone.
The star act in the Daptone stable, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, released their highly anticipated third album,"100 Days, 100 Nights," October 2. The album has been greeted with instant critical acclaim and the group's loyal following grows in leaps and bounds from both a grassroots support and mainstream exposure. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings contribute "Keep on Looking" from the new album, and three classics from their previous album,"Naturally" to Scion CD v.19.
