This Ithaca-based singer-songwriter has been involved in projects ranging from hard rock to country punk to Latin, and his indie pop reflects that uncommon cross-breeding. Kobuk's tunes are, at their center, tender solo reflections, but the artist spins them with string-popping vigor and a gloss of ragged drums and jam-rock guitars.
Sean Kobuk's music blends muscular guitar riffing, quirky indie pop hooks and the depth and emotional honesty of the best alternative folk and country music. The rhythms are tight and punchy, the melodies catchy as hell and the lyrics straight from the heart and gut.
Kobuk's musical history runs the gamut from Northampton Mass. country punk group Beatrice and the heavy rock of San Francisco?s Bless and Burn (founded with brother and drummer Darren Kennedy) to reggae and Brazilian pop. After playing the role of lead guitarist for the first years of his career, Sean took a break from gigging in bands to focus on songwriting and recording.? The songs blended Kobuk's indie rock roots with his love of classic pop songwriting often blending genres a la Beck or Bowie.
In December of 2004 Sean released his debut CD entitled Angels in the Rearview Mirror on local record collective I Town records. Moving from quiet acoustic numbers to heavy rock Kobuk's knack for creating beautiful melodies and compelling arrangements leaves you with choruses that will be bouncing around in your cranium for weeks. Kobuk's music has been compared to everyone from Nirvana and REM to Elliott Smith but one reviewer put it best when he said "You get the energy and force of rock and roll delivered with soulful intensity."
