Instrumental hip-hop producers often make beats so experimental, they unattractively come off as attention hungry, or they fall into a formulaic been-there-done-that. Brookyln's Shakeyface doesn't do either; in fact, he bridges the two. His beats are subtle yet interest-grabbing. They're mellow yet not muddled, creating a marked target for tasteful rappers everywhere.
Hailed as "abstract hip-hop's next big thing" (Epitonic) and "off center but on target" (XLR8R), Brooklyn-based producer Shakeyface is a talented creative force bubbling just below the surface.
All Music describes his songs as "adventurous soundscapes" with "thick, dirty beats". An EP, Puddle Jumping During A Monsoon on Belgium's Quatermass and several appearances on different label compilations can be found in his growing discography.
Shakeyface also DJ's on the regular, serving up a special Shakey blend of crunked-up hip-hop, deep funk, leftfield electronics and Shakeyface originals alongside the likes of Dangermouse & Jemini, Prefuse 73, Boozoo Bajou, Funkstorung, Hollertronix, Five Deez and others.
Compiled by label head James Allen aka Colorform, Liberation Systems breathes new life into New York City's underground electronic music scene with the debut compilation, the head nodding De-Programming Sequence. Featuring brand new unreleased material from DJ Spooky, DJ Wally, Guillermo E Brown, Spectre & Sensational, Shakeyface, Mentol Nomad and Colorform himself; the album presents a cerebral yet playful mix of hip-hop, jungle, and dub. Inspired by the early illbient compilations on Liquid Sky, Wordsound, and Asphodel, Liberation Systems picks up the torch and blazes their own path updating this foundation for tomorrow's electronic listener.
