Started mostly as a documentation of their largely improvised music, Sharks and Seals came to be more by accident than by intention. Joe Tricoli and Todd Matei make up the core of Sharks and Seals and It Used To Be Knobs and Machines and Now It’s Numbers and Light is the debut release by the former guitarists of Chicago mates Joan Of Arc, Friend/Enemy and the defunct Bimbobs.
Initially an entertaining experiment,Todd and Joe found themselves dedicating more time to their group of work and in the process taming the loose song structures. Based on the sheer pleasure they felt from the results, Todd and Joe soon asked others to contribute. The unique and exciting It Used To Be Knobs and Machines and Now It’s Numbers and Light features appearances by Ryan Rhapsys, RobRoy Cambell, Tim Kinsella, Amy Cargill and shatters any chance of comparison.
Joe, the designated voice of the band , sings lead on the majority of the record. However, both Todd and Joe add to the wordplay within the release. Todd is also responsible for the digital processing work, which adds rhythmic and at times melodic texture to the songs. Brimming with memorable melodies, menacing rhythms, blips of digital trickery and smatterings of swirling and fragmented guitar. The debut release from Sharks and Seals will leave an impression of warm delight followed by introspective wonderment.
