Perpetual underdogs and champions of perseverance, Silkworm is one of the most interesting yet criminally overlooked bands in the indie-rock underground. Expressive, unwieldy guitar lines, sturdy, growling bass, and hard-as-hell drumming merge into a muscular sound that has grown progressively stronger over the group's 17-year existence. For the uninitiated, a new favorite awaits.
Silkworm was founded September 1987 in Missoula, Montana. CDs were in their infancy, and the Internet as we know it did not exist. From Missoula (1987-1989) to Seattle (1990-2001) to Chicago (2001-present), Silkworm has had several mailing addresses. The band has had a single email address, silkworm@cnw.com, although for several years the members have had their own wildly entertaining website at www.silkworm.net. This website contains discographical details and other important information. It'll Be Cool is the ninth Silkworm album. The band has also released a couple of albums with friends under different names, a few EPs, some tapes, and a bunch of singles. One compilation of old stuff to date. This core membership has been solid for the last decade: Andy Cohen Various stringed instruments with frets.Michael Dahlquist Drums and cymbals. Occasional guitar. Tim Midgett Bass and other guitars. For the last two albums, Silkworm has had a fourth recording and occasional performing member: Matt Kadane (Bedhead, The New Year, Consonant), playing his natural instrument of piano as well as other keyboard-based devices. However, Silkworm is a band, not a collection of individuals. Therefore, if you want to know who wrote a given song, you will have to ask, as these credits are not published. Here's a hint. Generally, whoever sings something wrote it, though this is not always the case. However, if you want to know who sings a given song, you will have to ask as well. Silkworm has toured the U.S. many times. The band has also toured Canada, Western Europe, Italy, and Japan. The band has been to Croatia and Slovenia both. The band has many funny stories about being on tour and engaging in tour-based shenanigans. Silkworm has been written about in many magazines and played on many radio stations. The members of Silkworm like to make up new songs, play in front of people, and record their music. It'll Be Cool was pored over meticulously for almost a year from start to finish. Everyone associated with the record is confident of its worth, and they offer it to you with the best of intentions and open hearts.
