This Brussels outfit blends the already-quite-blended neosoul style of an Erykah Badu with Euro club rhythms. But these aren't harsh, deep techno beats--no glowering Berlin D.J.s here. They're snappy, late-funk rumbles tailored for glowing soundscapes and sultry vocals.
Soul:ID's story actually begins in Africa, where three quarters of the band originate from, and climaxes in Brussels/Belgium/Europe: this is where the musical friendship of four blossomed into the Afropean Soul concept (or family) we now know as Soul:ID.
Before coming together as a band, the four friends were hardworking musicians in their own
right. Tchai worked as a session vocalist for a variety of artists, Urban Deep was a drummer and also produced various bands and artists. Around this same period, Dad'D was working a lot in the studio as producer as well as a session vocalist: Dad'D sometimes toured with Tchai and also with V, another gifted singer who also did some photo modeling on the side. With Brussels being the cosmopolitan micropolis it is, it really was only a matter of time before the four would meet and decide to make things happen...
It was Tchai and Urban Deep who got the ball rolling. Feeling strongly that the time had come to stop working on other people's projects and instead create something that was of their own making, they started working on what was initially meant to be a Tchai solo album. Their friends became very interested in what they were doing, and often came by the studio
Biography to offer ideas and even lay down their skills during the music making process. Very soon, the natural dynamics between the four took on a life of its own: the original duo had morphed into a quartet!
It quickly became clear that the blending of creative juices from the four, the unique
combination of musical talent and personalities of each individual formed a strong, almost
family]like unit: musically, the creations reflected the rich melting pot of influences,
personalities and ideologies of the four. Existing as a tight musical unit inside the studio and
as true friends beyond these walls, it made sense to "officialize" this state of being, hence
Soul:ID was born. 'Soul' because soul music was the strong common musical connector and
'ID' as in identity: four different personalities hailing from four different countries (spanning
2 continents), with four different life stories, unified at the soul level; Soul:ID are adamant
that what the collective is definitely not about is ego inflating individuality. The uniqueness
of such a combination of individuals in the urban music arena naturally attracts a lot of
curiosity; Soul:ID hope to one day rise to the occasion and be seen as a positive example of
harmony across borders and cultural differences.
Soul:ID take their music seriously. Their debut album three years in the making,
has been an intense labor of love, honed to detailed perfection at both the artistic and
technical level. This creative journey was an intimate, intensive period, which deepened their personal and artistic inter connectedness: their Afropean Soul Music debut is aptly titled, Sex, Love & Philosophy, which were the typical subjects being hotly debated as music was being made in the studio. The album was exclusively written, produced and recorded by
Soul:ID, mainly in Brussels, Belgium. Mixing took place in Los Angeles, USA, where the
magic touch of Dylan "3D" Dresdow (Black Eyed Peas/Wu Tang Clan/Tweet) was added,
while mastering took place on the other coast, Sony Studios, New York City courtesy of James Cruz (Tony Braxton/Three 6 Mafia/Lil Kim).
Having already toured with Zap Mama across Europe, Soul:ID also headlined at the
legendary JazzCafe in London and are featured on compilations and mixtapes worldwide.
