The crackly backing to this Bronx chanteuse's new EP has its most obvious basis in warm soul, but her work with Geoff Barrow (Portishead) means that we can't ignore the textural alignments with trip-hop. Why didn't we notice before how soaring R&B could mix with those hypnotic modern beats?

Bronx, NY native Stephanie Mckay is set to deliver her highly anticipated self-titled EP on September 26.These 5 songs are a stunning collection of musical compositions that fuse her powerful urban poetics, effortlessly combining soul, hip-hop and funk.
Already called a “gutsy” singer in the pages of British Esquire, the music offered on Stephanie Mckay’s EP disc happens to be that proverbial “next level” that most artists merely dream about.
Stephanie Mckay has grown to be a respected artist among fans and critics alike, through work with producer Geoff Barrow of Portishead, Soulive, DJ Spinna as well as contributing her vocals to projects for Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Tricky, and Roy Hargrove.
The album Tell It Like It Is will be released in early 2007.
