Editor's review

If you're gonna rag on throwbacks in today's hip-hop climate, you'd better have the game to back it up. This N.C. MC's got the rhymes and then some--keen, irreverent flows that earned him top honors from ?uestlove at an Okayplayer unsigned artist contest. The vet of Cunnunlynguist and KRS collabs comes into his own on his second LP "Chain Letters."

Biography

After being plagued by a string of bad luck and mishaps in music & life, most artists would crumble under pressure and throw in the towel. Failure was not an option for the Greenville, North Carolina native known as Supastition who has single-handedly fought for his recognition in the industry. Building his name soley off of the disbelief of naysayers, Supastition proves that his name is no longer "a belief based on ignorance".

Supastition's love for music was found accidentally when a young Kamaarphial Moye and his 2 cousins decided to mimic their favorite rappers and create their own song using only a turntable, microphone, and a Doug E. Fresh instrumental. That day sparked the beginning of a lifetime passion and a career as an emcee. After years of experimenting with various indies, Supa got his first shot courtesy of Rasco (of Cali Agents) and his imprint label Pockets Linted Entertainment with a 12" release "Broke Man's Anthem". The vinyl-only release made minimal noise which led Supa to shop his debut album to other labels shortly following the release of the single. The debut album "7Years of Bad Luck" gained the interest of indie hip hop label, Freshchest Records, who offered an opportunity for Supastition to drop his first full length endeavor. Though the album was beset by poor production (in Supastition?s personal opinion), "7 Years of Bad Luck" was praised by magazines such as URB, Elemental, Insomniac, and more. The single "da Waiting Period" served as an ode to unsigned artists everywhere and addressed all of the issues he dealt with while trying to earn himself a spot on a label?s roster. The buzz from his debut made way for a slew of guest appearances on albums by CunninLynguists, Jon Doe, and other underground mainstays. Supa spent his time gracing stages with the likes of Little Brother, Cage, Breez Evahflowin, J-Zone, and his own DJs Faust & Shortee to keep his name bubblin? in the minds of likeminded hip hop heads. His undeniable skills landed him on mixtapes by Spitkicker.com, Meddafore, and Phila Flava's "A League of Our Own".

The bad luck had officially come to an end when Supastition received a call from Grit Records about appearing on the album "Keep Right" of the legendary KRS One. Following recording his verse for the KRS One song, Supastition and producer Nicolay were hand-selected by ?uestlove (of The Roots) as winners of the Okayplayer.com unsigned artist contest. Out of over 5,000 entries, the song entitled "The Williams" was chosen to appear on Okayplayer Records first release "Okayplayer presents True Notes Vol. 1" alongside artists such as The Roots, Dilated Peoples, Little Brother, Skillz, Jean Grae, and RJD2. A few months later, he was invited by ?uestlove to perform live onstage with The Roots & Skillz during their Okayplayer Tour performance in Charlotte, NC (where he currently resides). Subsequent to winning the contest, Supastition was faced with the choice of deciding which label would be a perfect home for his sophomore album, "Chain Letters". Many companies approached him but few would offer him the chance to keep his masters and rights to his music. Soulspazm Records, who first met Supastition during his performance at Beat Society, came to the table with an offer and worthy opportunity.

Now with a string of bad luck behind him, Supastition has a great deal of recognition to look forward to. His incredible EP "The Deadline" will be released on October 19, 2004 on Soulspazm Records with production from M-phazes, Illmind, Dela, Madwreck, and more beatsmiths. Also, Okayplayer Records has chosen "The Williams" as the follow-up single to their "True Notes Vol. 1" compilation which should push Nicolay & Supastition's name into the limelight after years of dedication. The music doesn't stop there as Supastition has inked 12" deals with various indie labels (Uncut Records) to release tracks he has recorded with Domingo, Muneshine, and Jake One. And finally, the release of his long-awaited sophomore LP, Chain Letters, will see the light of day in February 2005 with production from some of hip hop's finest producers, 9th Wonder, Nicolay, M-phazes, Illmind, and Madwreck. Within the span of 2-3 years, his life & career have been upgraded and jet-propelled by unforgettable guest appearances and buzz-worthy tracks that have found their way into the ears of the right fans and industry heads. Though there will always be skeptics, it's safe to say that someone now believes in Supastition?
