The slow, dreamy Southern country-rock of My Morning Jacket combines with a darker urban ennui in the Close's brooding tracks. It's an appealing blend that makes more sense musically than it should in theme; languorous riffs and molasses vocals are part of each genre for entirely different reasons.
The Close may be from down-south, but its allegiance to the more blatantly melodic strains of D.C.'s post-hardcore movement is pleasingly genuine and readily apparent. Like the Beauty Pill and Juno before them, The Close possesses the ability of indulging in gratifying hooks and melodies while first and foremost thrusting forth with a genuine intellect and healthy brashness. It's the sound of an infinitely more unique plane of existence where Jawbox, Dismemberment Plan, and Faraquet influences the bulk of the indie-pop scene, and records like Sun, Burn are instant cult classics, hailed by throngs of awed musicians waiting to be lifted out of cynicism and apathy. The Close's Sun, Burn, is destined to be an underground treasure, one that should join the pop kids and staunch thinkers hand-in-hand, differences settled.
