If this New Zealand trio sounds deliciously like Pinback, it's less because these three are miming that crew and more that they agree with its project. And it is a really good project: parsing postrock's mathy shuffles and patient drums for those of us who wish they'd get to the melody.
The Deadly Deaths is a restrained-indie-synth-pop trio from Hamilton who formed in early 2006. Nick Feisst (guitar/vocals) and Tuhua Mutu (synthesizer/vocals) - originally members of Nimbus, met Bevan Galbraith (drums/vocals) of the Dead Pan Rangers through involvement in Hamilton's music scene. After Nimbus disbanded and Bevan returned home from the Dead Pan Rangers' jaunt around Europe, the three decided to form a new group. 2006 saw The Deadly Deaths play their first gigs and release their first single 'See The World' to radio. A stop-motion animated music video for the song was also produced and gave them exposure to a more global audience through the net. (www.thedeadlydeaths.com/video/) In 2007 The Deadly Deaths have released their debut self-titled album and a second single 'Half-Time Double-Team'. (www.thedeadlydeaths.com/music/) The sound of the band can be somewhat explained by Nick's fascination with the likes of Kraftwerk, The Knife, Pink Floyd and The Meat Puppets, Tu's love of movies, Hendrix and Radiohead, and Bevan's utter distaste for anything other than Fugazi and maybe a few other bands. Watch out for their two-tone orange/brown Ford Transit van as it tootles around NZ over the coming seasons, or go to their website for free downloads of the first two singles and to view the much lauded video.
