Editor's review

Instrumental hip-hop's other 5--the Jurassic one--makes a helpful reference point for this supergroup. Not only is Chali 2na in on both, but also Dino's bouncy beats and wisecracking rhymes are squarely J5. They're also ideal for the project's goal: rap that's suitable for children but credible for adults.

Biography

Some of the most respected names in hip hop have joined forces for a new album, due out April 1. The record features Chali 2na (Jurassic 5), Prince Paul (Stetsasonic, De La Soul), Ladybug Mecca (Digable Planets) Scratch (the Roots), and Wordsworth (eMC). This all-star cast makes up a quintet known as The Dino 5, and their album of prehistoric rap is called 'Baby Loves Hip Hop.' This is the second release in the Baby Loves Music series - a project made for music- loving parents who want to share the fun and creative values of music with their children.

This group of lauded MC's and producers share common bonds: they all have contributed their talents to the massive worldwide success of hip hop, and they all have kids. This album marked an opportunity for these artists to share their music with a new generation in a world where hip hop is in virtually every music lover's CD collection.

Prince Paul, whose production credits include De La Soul's seminal '3 Feet High And Rising,' recently told Newsday that his goal with the project was "to make a hip hop record for kids that's not corny. What we're trying to do is teach them things like counting and colors, and at the same time make the whole thing cool." As he was recording the album, Paul's test audience was his daughter. "If she said "Play it again!" I knew I was on the right track. Kids are honest."
