Taking practically as many liberties with meter as the Meters, this jazz-funk trio sizzles with fat sax and horns, strutting bass, and all the great '70s synth organs. And if sonic ancestors like Sly Stone and James Brown can be counted on for precedent, those hotpants won't be staying on for long.
The Hotpants formed in November of 1999 more of less by chance. Paul Stache and Frank Christopher (owners of the jazz club "SMOKE") asked Joe Strasser to piece together a funk band for two appearances at their club. The reception was so good that The Hotpants have now maintained a steady Wednesday night at SMOKE for just under two years straight. Through this steady gig as well as other appearances throughout the city and elsewhere, The Hotpants have developed a unique and personal style combining elements of The Meters, James Brown and others.
