After the renaissance of the '90s, the '00s have so far been a pretty barren decade for psychedelic Britpop, but this Australian outfit has the hooks to get on the radio and the street cred not to need it. They open for Morrissey; they collab with Sonic Youth; half the time they sound like the Finn brothers covering Black Rebel Motorcyle Club, the other half like Oasis doing R.E.M.
The Lovetones released their debut album, Be What You Want, in 2002 to critcal acclaim. During 2002 The Lovetones received constant national airplay and toured Australia extensively, eventually scoring the coveted support slot for Morrissey on the Sydney leg of his first ever solo Australian tour.
In early 2003 Anton Newcombe released the Be What You Want album in the US on his imprint The Committee To Keep Music Evil through Bomp! Records. Tow went to the US in March 2003 as guest rhythm guitarist for The Brian Jonestown Massacre's 25 date tour of the US. April 2003 was spent holed up in LA's Figment Studios with the BJM. By the time The Lovetones reconvened in LA in early May, Tow had contributed two of his own tracks to the BJM album ...And This Is Our Music which was released later that year through New York based label Tee Pee Records.
A palpable buzz began to surround The Lovetones in certain US music circles by the time they had completed the May 2003 tour of the US with the BJM. The Lovetones soon joined the likes of The Warlocks, The BJM and Clinic with a 7" release on the ultra-hip Limited Addition label. UK based Fire Records then invited The Lovetones to contribute a track to the remarkable James Joyce Chamber Music project alongside such acts as Mercury Rev, Mike Watt, Sonic Youth and REM?s Peter Buck.
2004 saw the release of The Lovetones? Stars EP in Australia through Chatterbox Records that coincided with The BJM/The Lovetones tour of Australia in May. The remainder of 2004 and early 2005 was spent recording the follow-up album to Be What You Want.
The Lovetones long-awaited second album, Meditations, will be released in the US on 18 October 2005 through Tee Pee Records with a US tour to follow. The new album reveals a further development of Tow's songwriting craft combining introspective lyrics and impeccable pop smarts with a penchant for dizzying space-rock psychedelia thrown into the mix for good measure. Fourteen tracks of magically lush, other-wordly delights.
