Editor's review

You may raise eyebrows at the notion of Slovenian rockabilly--but that's only because you've never heard "Strangers in the Night" drenched in heavy European accents. Weirdly enough, it may top the American twangers, imparting an earnest, pompadourish glee where our re-enactors store their kitsch.

Biography

The Lucky Cupids - could be something between old and new sound of rockabilly style, mixed raw & tender but everything base on melodic; imagine young Elvis, Burnette, Gene Vincent, Vince Taylor...mixed with Chris Isaak, Brian Setzer,...mixed with Sinatra and Dean Martin, Julie London lounge style, maybe a little bit of western swing... For today rockabilly scene is outstanding vocal of Andrej Rudolf and realy professional cool guitar licks of Matevz Carnelutti. THE LUCKY CUPIDS MUSIC LISTS ARE THE BEST OF ROCKABILLY MUSIC EVER! LUCKY CUPIDS Red hot swingin' rockabilly from Slovenia. Great production, great vocal, good choice of covers and beautiful solo guitar I only heard by Stray Cats. You know what I mean. It's nice, a bit clear and warm guitar sound. These guys are great musicians and they know how to create the 50s sphere. You can really enjoy it with The Lucky Cupids even if you are not big rockabilly fan. I love when they sing in Slovenian, sounds even better than in English. I strongly recommend this Band to everybody - not only rockabilly lovers. "Pride Dan" is mostly in Slovenian and almost cover free (at least I recognize only few songs, but please forgive my poor knowledge of rockabilly music). Honestly it's even better than really great "Red Hot Rockabilly". Lucky Cupids are really great songwriters. Great guitar sound, specially in "Kaksna je ta zenska?". I must say that "Tainted Love" is really great killer version of early 80s synth pop. I also love "Zacaran Sem", nice rockabilly ballad with beautiful guitar - with Las Vegas strip bar feeling. Bonus is acoustic rockabilly session - nice for after hours with bottle of vine. / NO BRAINS ZINE! Lucky Cupids Really good Eurobilly from Slovenia, with excellent production, loads of oomph and that 'sweeping' guitar sound. It's got that 'Eurobilly' style - think of Mac Curtis on King meets Joe Meek! Mostly sung in Slovene, but don't let that put you off. This is an excellent CD from The Lucky Cupids, with some nice melodic, catchy songs. They were good enough for The Rockabilly Rave.....The title translates as 'Come the day'. "The Lucky Cupids was established in 1994 and plays mainly the crazy 50's rockabilly music, a mix between swing, surf, rhythm and blues, a little country and western style. Their first CD, Pride Dan was released in 1999 and is the first and only rockabilly project in Slovenia. Almost all the songs are in Slovene, but don't let that put you off, because all tracks sound really great! The first thing that strikes me when listening to the CD, is that the many familiar songs do not sound like cover versions. They sound new and original. The band did not copy the songs note by note, but added their own musical ideas. The instrumental side of the tracks is very strong, fresh and professional. Vocalist Andrej Rudolf sounds a lot like Vince Taylor. Other influences are The Johnny Burnette Trio, Gene Vincent and The Stray Cats. The Lucky Cupids deserve more international recognition." / Home Plamet.nl 2002 What would you expect if I said: "Red hot rockabilly from Slovenia"? You probably would ask: "What is Slovenia?" Slovenia is a small European country between Austria and Italy. If you are curious, just look it up in your favorite encyclopedia on CD-Rom. I don't know much about the favorite national music in Slovenia, but it could hardly be Rockabilly. Yet there is at least one band that plays the real red hot, authentic fifties and sixties rockabilly and rock & roll. The band is called THE LUCKY CUPIDS and they have one CD out, called "Pride dan". The CD is on Nika Records and has also been released in England, on the Nervous label. The following tracks are on the CD: 1. Pride dan; 2. Ker ti ne ve?; 3. Kak?na je ta zenska; 4. Moja sestra nebi; 5. Nina; 6. U mislik si mi ti; 7. Ne morem brez nje; 8. Zacaran sem; 9. Men je cist useen; 10. Tainted love; 11. Show business je O.K.; 12. Mexicali baby. The group was established in 1994 and plays mainly the crazy 50's rockabilly music, a mix between swing, surf, rhythm and blues, a little country and western style. Their first CD PRIDE DAN has been released in 1999 and is the first and only rockabilly project in Slovenia. Almost all the songs are in Slovene, but don't let that put you off, because all tracks sound really great! I just got their new promo CD with songs from Pride dan, new songs, live recordings, demo's and home recordings. There are 29 tracks on the promo and I will only mention the English songs, although the quality of the other songs is by no means less. Help me make it through the night; Baby let's play house; Desperado love; One cup of coffee; Brand new Cadillac; Shakin' all over; Lonely blue boy; Gunnin' for the dog; Rock-a-billy boogie; Baby what you want me to do; Stray cat strut; Johnny b. good; Just a little bit; Rock this town; Doin' time for bein' young; Love me; That'll be the day; Young and beautiful; Something I said. I do not know if there are already songs scheduled for release on a new CD, but I hope so. The Lucky Cupids deserve more international recognition. / Rocking & Stomping Magazine / MORE ABOUT THE LUCKY CUPIDS here!: http://www.myspace.com/theluckycupids; http://spaces.msn.com/TheLuckyCupids/; http://spaces.msn.com/TheLuckyCupids2/; http://spaces.msn.com/montekristo01/
