The Peg Twisters

The Peg Twisters is an old-time string band that combines lovely three-part harmony vocals with sizzling instrumentals. The three band members regularly place at regional old-time music competitions and perform locally in Western North Carolina.

Dona Cavanagh – Fiddle

Dona has been an important part of the Asheville music scene for the last 25 years. A member of the band Too Hot to Cook for many years, she is both a talented fiddler and vocalist. She has won first place in regional fiddle contests including the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival and the NC Mountain State Fair. In 1996, she joined the Carolina Old-Timers distinguishing herself as one of the area’s top twin fiddlers. Born and bred into Buffalo’s Irish music scene, Dona remarkable voice beautifully delivers Irish, swing, gospel and mountain melodies. When not playing music, Dona works locally as a nurse and plays with her dogs, Tanner and Lacy.

Jerry Sutton – Guitar

One of the hottest old-time pickers around, Jerry hails from a family with musical roots that run deep in the mountains of Western NC. Jerry’s father was the well-known Asheville fiddler Grover Sutton and his son is one of the nation’s best young guitar players, Bryan Sutton, who first came into the spotlight as the guitar player in Ricky Skagg’s band, Kentucky Thunder. Jerry’s guitar and base playing has picked up awards at Fiddler’s Grove, Transylvania Halloween Fest, the NC Mountain State Fair and many other regional contests. Jerry has previously played and recorded with the Hominy Valley String Band and the Pisgah Pickers. An educator of many years, Jerry taught U.S. history.

Bob Gregory – Banjo

From sunny California, Bob was a founding member of several early West Coast bluegrass bands during the 1960s including the Atomic Steam Ratchet String Band, the Hickory Stump Marsh Marmots and the Solid State Boys. In 1968, he went on a USO tour through Asia and the Pacific with the Country Coalition. During two decades abroad, he explored the musical cultures of Greece, the Balkans and the Middle East. In Israel, he performed with White and Bluegrass, the premiere bluegrass band in the country. He was also a founding member of Gentle Strength, one of the country’s most popular English vocal groups, and performed with the group until his return to the states in 1996. Settling in the Southern Appalachians to be near the music he loves, Bob joined the Carolina Old-Timers. Since this time, Bob has also been the recipient of awards for banjo and guitar in many regional contests.
