Out of the ashes of several previously unsettled line-ups The Swing Club came to fruition around 1987. Winning the Victorian Campus Battle Of The Bands (Australia) afforded the band their first successful 7" release "Let's Say Goodbye". Positive reviews led to support from community radio and local campuses and this in turn kick started live performances in Melbourne and in particular the southern surfcoast.
A second 7" release, "Turn it Around" topped the critics reviews in several publications including "Juke", "Ram", and "Beat" magazines and this gave the band confidence to self finance a full length L.P "Spread the Word" in 1989. The final and most successful line-up of the group included songwriter and all round groovy guru, Robyn Dickinson: lead guitar, sax, harmonica, vocals. Suzanne Conroy: lead vocals, rhythm guitar, stress. Jeff Powerlett: bass guitar, buckles. Shane Fitchet: drums, percussion, opinions.
