Psyche-popsters the Telepathic Butterflies have emerged from their retro-pop chrysalis to soar on wings of pure harmony. Frequent migrations between Canada and Detroit have infused their garage-based jangle with an extra dose of lysergic punk power. These delicate and graceful creatures will loving flit from ear to ear.
Though formed during the waning years of the 20th Century, the Telepathic Butterflies’ core duo of Rej and Jake has been closely acquainted for about as long as Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions has been in print. Bass player Eric, meanwhile, came into the fold shortly after the 2000 release of the band’s independent debut CD Nine Songs (several tracks of which were revisited two years later on the much more widely released Introducing).
Previously, Eric handled four-string duties as a member of now defunct Winnipeg art-rock combo Grand Theft Canoe.
Prior to Eric’s conscription, Rej and Jake typically performed live as a two-piece unit, or with the assistance of local music scene veterans like Angus Kirkpatrick (Bored Millionaires, Grand Theft Canoe, Perry Combovers) and Rob Pachol (Driving Wheel, Rowdy Men, Windups). Both of those talented guitarists remain active members of the Telepathic Butterflies’ extended family and are still known to provide live accompaniment on occasion.
Like the diurnal Lepidopteran creatures the band is named for, the Telepathic Butterflies are not inclined towards inactivity. Accordingly, the group has covered a great deal of ground over the past couple of years, including performances throughout North America and an inaugural live foray to Western Europe alongside Motorcity labelmates Outrageous Cherry. The coming months promise a great deal of activity as well, as the band looks to expand its live performance universe exponentially while encouraging all those who appreciate the finer things in music to add the Telepathic Butterflies to their collections.
