The ska hallmark of juicy horns on the upbeats meets both Caribbean rhythms and modern urban beatmaking in Voodoo's densely sampled blend. It's a rousing bonanza, but only a beach party in theory. Clever reverb washes and incanted vocal loops land it in Clerkenwell's most laid-back club.
The VTQ are a cult band from the UK whose unique sound blends old ska 45s, lounge and exotica with a wry sense of humour and a contemporary sensibility. The result is somehow much more modern than the sum of its parts would imply.
Formed in 2004 the bands first tracks were made freely available on the internet by their creator as supposedly 'rediscovered' originals. The joke backfired however when the tracks became immensely popular in their own right and each one clocked up thousands of downloads.
From here the new formed independent label Freshly Squeezed Music took note and signed the band for their eponymous debut album in 2005. A live 8- piece, fez-wearing band was subsequently put together to tour the material and dates followed at clubs and festivals across Europe.
