Listening to the Weather is like listening to several different versions of the 1980s, all played at once. The agitated vocals of David Byrne (art-rock '80s), tart guitars (post-punk '80s), and shiny keys (pop '80s) are concocted as oddly as New Coke. Unfortunately, they have also been discontinued.
You don't know what you've got till it's gone. Back in Spring '04, Vancouver's Jeremy Todd and Vanessa Kwan got together to bang out minimal rock under the moniker The Kwantodd. Enlisting the help of former Neins denizens Elizabeth Milton and Rick Clark, the band's sound crystallized around a cagey, Gang of Four-adoring din. But not for long. Adding Dave Look on bass drum to compliment Vanessa Kwan's tom-and-snare percussion attack, they'd christen themselves The Weather, record a left-field pop full-length, and bow into the ether before its release. But the album will be released online, for free later this month. And if the playground mania of "Denial" is any indication, the record is a document of one of the most shamefully underappreciated Canadian bands in recent memory.
