Editor's review

The psych-rock buffoonery of Syd Barrett's swingin' '60s gets a winning update in this London group's work. Zetland brings twee, trippy lyricism--where animals are kept in cupboards and "your best friend's a crow"--under the shelter of sturdy folk rambles.

Biography

Through an innovative blend of double bass, acoustic and electric guitars, harmonica, harmonies and anything else that takes their fancy, The Zetland Players prove that 3 men is enough for a party. If you like The Zetland Players you may enjoy other Ugly Nephew Records artists such as Southern Tenant Folk Union! Decidedly English yet unafraid of adventure, their constantly expanding body of original material brings the rich transatlantic traditions of Folk, Pop, Swing and Rock and Roll right up to date. Built upon lucid and wry lyrics the songs are eccentric, catchy and with a swinging beat you could wash clothes to. The Zetland Players' take on Pop is bound to surprise and inevitably entertaining. Formed by Tobias George Silvester (lead vocals, acoustic guitar and harmonica) and Wiper (double bass) in 2004, The Zetland Players rocky beginnings included a thieving ex-guitarist, several comically under-attended gigs and a misguided yet magnificent 3 month tour in America. In a bid to take their music to a wider audience, The Zetland Players decamped to North London and enlisted the help of electric guitarist and vocalist Adrian Zookrow in early 2006. Having honed their sound as enthusiastic and charming live performers, their self produced debut "Making Friends With...The Zetland Players" provides a snapshot of these prolific and hard working song writers. With a growing and dedicated fan base and a firm commitment to live appearances the Zetland boys are putting themselves in the ears and pockets of young and old alike.
