Three Ways West come from the splintered heart of a northern industrial town where there is nothing but discord, boredom and apathy. We live alongside a council swarming with fascists, a population that finds solace in battering each other on a daily basis, and a health service that is crumbling before our very eyes whilst ordinary working people relent to spending hard earned money on private care.
So we decided to make a record. The Horseriding EP – named after a term used in the 19th century to refer to the people of the circus – contains four songs, mixing high paced energy with the brashness of metal and elements of grunge and hardcore, combined with well thought structures and challenging lyrics. Our songs focus on subjects that simply aren’t addressed by the vast majority of bands these days; most seem to be happy to stick three chords together and write a song that’s been done a million times before with zero ambition.
That’s the last thing we want to do. We feel it’s totally necessary to write real songs about real things happening in the real world. That’s why on The Horseriding EP the lyrics converge on the monopoly of mobile phones and consoles, globalisation as the new form of imperialism, the making docile of teenagers in preparation for completely nonchalant adult life, and the encouragement of competition and financial draining among the falsehood of the “middle-class”.
We’re not pretending to be anything groundbreaking or original, nor are we prepared to place ourselves in a specific musical stream or state who we sound like – that’s for you to decide. We’re simply raw with intent to make some impact on a decaying musical institution and to give people the opportunity to listen to what we’re about.
Our ultimate aim is reasonably straightforward and sincere. We just want to combine all the best bits from our favourite bands and create a sound that’s been pushed out of people’s lives by the same stale emission of the same retrogressive “garage” bands and the same watered-down punk travesties with the same fuck all to say. Every day it’s the same. Surely it’s time for a bit of a change…
There’s no better time than now.
All the best – Andy, Tom, Adam and Rob.
