Editor's review

The problem with so many singer-songwriters claiming Austin as home is that the town's own homegrown sound has been largely overshadowed. Logically, the central Texas city should be a crossroads for Mexican and country, and if Hinojosa has her way that mix may be revived. Hinojosa joins traditional Mexican folk with sweet vocals suggestive of Emmylou Harris.

Biography

From the White House to el barrio, Tish Hinojosa has enchanted, enlightened and entertained countless listeners with her distinctive cross-cultural music. In the process, she has become one of the most acclaimed and beloved artists in the contemporary Latin and folk scene. With a purity of voice and a vision that also embraces pop, rock, Tejano and international styles into her music, she reflects modern America s multicultural richness with sincerity, heart and a winning musicality. On her latest release, A Heart Wide Open, Tish continues to express her distinctive musical styles and background. From the opening Never Say Never Love Again in which she gracefully blends her Latin and folk roots to her keen observation of today s world in the jangly, pop-flavored Whatever Happened To Everyone Wanting To Care to the perfect Mexican folk of Derechos de el Corazon to her country Shotgun Ridin , Hinojosa refuses to be pigeonholed. A Heart Wide Open is a totally new work with a couple Spanish songs, a little bit of family story, a little bit of the usual stories and songs. I’m excited about it. Family, music and a multicultural perspective were hallmarks of Hinojosa s years growing up in San Antonio, where she began performing as a teen.

Alongside the traditional Mexican songs she inherited from her parents, she was inspired by the pop and rock artists she and her older siblings listened to along with the folk revival of the early 1960s. Performing in her hometown as well as doing stints in Taos and Nashville during the 1980s, she eventually landed in the renowned Austin, TX music scene in 1988. Her 1989 debut album, Homeland, found Hinojosa weaving all the threads of her musical ethos into a stunning tapestry that immediately put her on the international musical map.

With her next release, Culture Swing, Hinojosa won the NAIRD Award for Best Folk Album. Over the eleven subsequent releases, countless tours of North and South America and Europe, Hinojosa developed a loving and loyal audience. Her music and social activism on behalf of children, Latinas and farm workers have won her numerous awards and accolades including recognition by Fox TV s Bravo Honors and a Las Primeras Award from MANA, the largest organization of Latina women. In 1996, Tish was invited by President and Mrs. Clinton to perform at the White House.
