Featuring the track selection and mixing prowess of Dirty Vegas’ Paul Harris and upcoming producer/DJ Martijn Ten Velden, "Toolroom Knights, Vol. 1" kicks off a series that pays homage to producer Mark Knight's party of the same name. All the tracks combine to represent a sound that's not easily filed--though it's indeed got that dirty grit and driving midtone beat, it's neither electro nor progressive, but some weird space between the two. Perfect 2 a.m. peak-set music.
Toolroom Knights is a club night based around the Toolroom records and Producer/DJ Mark Knight’s distinctive sound, bringing the underground sound of Toolroom to the main stage. This independent dance label started hosting parties at key venues across the UK and Europe, creating a unique party atmosphere that so many ‘nerdy label-nights’ lack. “We recognize the need for quality "new music" and are about fresh, world class talent and cutting edge sounds.”- Mark
The first installment of the Party’s compilation series features Dirty Vegas’ Paul Harris and up coming producer/DJ Martijn Ten Velden. The night was designed to push the musical boundaries of a scene that often fails to recognize new talent– exposing leaders of the new school!
As Mark explains: “Toolroom Knights is a showcase of up and coming fresh talent on the Toolroom roster, DJ’s and producers who consistently top charts in DJ Download & Beatport, which are true indicators of what’s happening …for us it’s all about fresh talent and cutting edge music!”
DISC 1: Martijn Ten Velden
Born and bred in Haarlem, Holland, Hip Hop was where Martijn made a name for himself early on in his career, tasting success as the DJ of Dutch hip hop collective “Da Mad Scientists”. It wasn’t long though before the sound of house music won him over and here begins Martijn’s journey to become one of today’s most respected and innovative DJ/producers on the scene. He's crafted a sound which is undeniably funky yet tribal with progressive and electro overtones. With trax like Tiefschwarz Feat. Tracey Thorn “Damage” (M.A.N.D.Y. Remix) and Justin Martin “Cicada” (Claude VonStroke 17 Year Mix), Martijn has carved out a driving and intense dance-floor gem.
As one fan put it: “Bye bye soulful house, welcome to the dark side. Shamone Mother F*****S”!!!!!!!!! He has to be one of the most enthusiastic DJ’s out there and was noted by Cooljunkie for his energy “--he smiles, he dances and he sends out this vibe that feels like he actually knows what you’re feeling while he spins; he’s in total harmony with the crowd!”
DISC 2: Paul Harris
Paul Harris is going from strength to strength – the Grammy Award winning artist has spent 2006 developing further and returning to his writing / production root’s, and with phenomenal results that should see 2007 be his most successful year yet. Following his brave decision in 2005 to leave the band Dirty Vegas, Harris has spent the past few years working with an eclectic mixture of people under various guises, combining his insatiable knowledge of what works on the dance floor and taking it into the studio to produce killer tracks that have received rave reviews. DJ wise, Harris is also excelling – with global highlights of ‘06 being Mint in Buenos Aries, Various trips to Brazil, Tribehouse in Germany and The Finger Party in Cannes. Harris’s also had his first solo Essential Mix broadcasted toward the end of ‘06 to rave reviews and he’s also had guest’s mixes aired all around the world – something which is set to continue through 2007!
