Editor's review

Picking the score for a transsexual coming-of-age film is a solid challenge, but Duncan Tucker got it just right with the genre that sang of "identity" long before that term was stuck to "politics": country. Dolly Parton and others voice the film's distinctly American brand of loneliness and hope.

Biography

"'Transamerica' is a remarkable movie. It touches you in every single place of human emotion." -- Dolly Parton

Nettwerk Records released the TRANSAMERICA ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK on February 7, 2006. Transamerica takes its audience on a journey across the heartland of America with Emmy award- winning Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives) as Bree, a conservative transsexual woman who has just learned that in her previous life as a man, she fathered a son (Kevin Zegers), now a teenage runaway hustling on the streets of New York.

The soundtrack features music heard throughout their travels, including songs from Old Crow Medicine Show, Lucinda Williams, exclusive tracks from Larry Sparks and Duncan Sheik and an original song from Dolly Parton, “Travelin’ Thru,” written specifically for the film.

For the soundtrack, writer/director Duncan Tucker wanted a musical anchor that would serve to ground the two main characters, Bree and Toby, in the heartland of America. The traditional sound evolves with each region they travel through and reflects the physical, emotional and mental journey these extraordinary characters experience.

"I wanted the music to evoke that mythic and universal theme of journey, transformation and coming home,” explains Tucker. “Bree is on a quest to rid herself of a treasure and finds her life completely changed in the end of it."

When Tucker was presented with the idea of asking an artist to create a song specifically for the film, he immediately knew who he wanted: “A woman who is truly a legend, an amazing musician, an icon of life force and invention, and one of our most brilliant singer/songwriters: Dolly Parton.”

"I was proud to be asked to write a song for Transamerica,” says Parton. “It’s a remarkable movie that touches you in every single place of human emotion. Working with Duncan Tucker was a great joy and wonderful experience. I’m glad that we were all “Travelin’ Thru” at the same time."

A heartfelt and uplifting song that truly captures the essence of journey and redemption in the film, “Travelin’ Thru” is unlike anything Dolly Parton has ever created. "It's a song you keep humming to yourself, one that stays in your head and heart," says Tucker. The Weinstein Company, the Weinstein brothers’ newly developed film company, is hopeful for a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination in the “Best Original Song” categories.

Transamerica is written/directed by Duncan Tucker and produced by Linda Moran and Rene Bastian of Belladonna Productions and by Sebastian Dungan. William H. Macy serves as executive producer.
