This experimental classical troupe describes itself as "Houston's most unusual string quartet," and considering the reams of gothed-out chamber music four-pieces in that town, that's saying something. But considering Two Star's irreverent blend of forms--the pirate shanty, the classical ballet, and the psychedelic folk--they just might be right.
Two Star Symphony is Houston's most unusual string quartet. Since its inception in 2002, Two Star has composed and performed over twenty original pieces, played many venues from small bars to vast auditoriums, collaborated with local theaters and traveled to both coasts to perform. Their aim is to create new and diverse music that speaks to the collective conscience of a broad audience, with music evoking starkly sketched imagery: a drunken pirate walks the plank, a marionette gains its footing, a black cat turns and hisses, a poisoned apple is offered, and goblins attack.
Two Star Symphony is Jo Bird (viola/toy piano), Debra Brown (violin/percussion), Margaret Lejeune (cello/harp) and Chenoa Mauthner (violin/mouth harp). Each member?s unique background brings together an eclectic variety of music styles, including gypsy, rock, hip-hop, metal, classical and electronic. Their hunger to experiment and explore the art of the string quartet has captured the imaginations of the young and old, despite whatever previously held notions they may have had of string quartets.
Two Star Symphony continues to make breakthroughs in their collaborations with other artists. The world of dance was opened to the group by two amazing choreographers, Paola Georgudis and Dominic Walsh. With Georgudis, Two Star first saw their music turned into movement. Later, Two Star lived and rehearsed in New York to bring the extended version of their composition ?Goblin Attack to the stages of the American Ballet Theater with Walsh?s dance ?Alchemy?.
Two Star has also explored the world of theater with Houston? SLUMP and Bobbindoctrin Puppet Theatre. The quartet dug deep into lowbrow stylings for two of SLUMP?s critically-feared Christmas shows. And with Bobbindoctrin, Two Star Symphony has seen their music turned into sophisticated and dark puppetry art in the three-part collaboration, Danse Macabre.
