Editor's review

Alex Gimeno is the kind of guy you'd expect to have a different flavored martini and arrangement of immaculately-trimmed facial hair for every day of the week. Raised in Miami and affected by its intercontinental vibe and abundance of art deco-fied digs, Gimeno's genre-casserole of samba, mambo, quirky breakbeat, and groovy disco sounds like he fiercely laments not being a young jet-setter during the swingin' '60s. Come to think of it, if Austin Powers were a real character, he and Gimeno (who is, well, a real character by every sense of the word) would be "BFF" for sure.

Biography

The mind behind URSULA 1000 is none other than the mild mannered Alex Gimeno. He's a Sagittarius and his favorite color is blue. He likes Chihuahuas too.Originating in New York City, Alex moved to sizzling Miami Beach, where he honed his skills by drumming in pop groups and dj-ing exotica to house and everything in between! After discovering samplers and drum machines, he completed the tracks that later became his debut album, The Now Sound. Alex moved back to New York City and was signed to the highly respected Eighteenth Street Lounge Music label operated by Washington DC's Thievery Corporation.

The Now Sound of Ursula 1000 album, drenched in its sound collage of lounge, funky breaks, and pastiche-a-delica, was released to critical acclaim. Tower Record's Pulse magazine named it one of the top ten dance albums of 1999. Joining the ranks of the international club pop/loungecore elite, some have called URSULA 1000 the U.S. ambassador to this tantalizing sound.

His second release All Systems Are Go Go, compiled and mixed from a live session by URSULA 1000, featured 18 cuts that are staples in his DJ set. With tracks from Japan, Germany, Italy, England and the U.S., the mix gives a worldwide selection of the finest in 60's infused big beat-o-ramas and latin tinged percussive workouts!

Keeping up with the jetsetting image, you can catch URSULA 1000 dj-ing his transcontinental grooves at discoth'ques worldwide and for fashionistas like Prada, Issey Miyake, Hugo Boss, Miss Sixty, Fiorucci, H&M, Diesel and Christian Dior. When in New York you can also catch him at his weekend residencies at the swank APT and the Soho Grand Lounge.

URSULA 1000 has also been very busy on the remix front adding his magic to tracks by Felix da Housecat, Quincy Jones, The Faint, Montifiori Cocktail, Nicola Conte and Pierre Henry to name a few, as well as being asked to remix the theme songs of The Powerpuff Girls and Sesame Street! He has also supplied music to a number of hit shows from Sex and the City and Queer Eye For The Straight Guy to Tony Hawk?s ESPN specials.

Featuring collaborations with Dr.Luke (guitarist of the Saturday Night Live band) and Brother Cleve (of loungesters Combustible Edison), 2002 saw Kinda' Kinky taking the Now Sound to a bigger and badder place where the leisure class meets the beatfreak upstarts on the dancefloor for a showdown! Cheeky Hammond organ breaks, spy caper intrigue, boogaloo shingalings, samba disco, a pinch of electro and bongos bongos bongos are most definitely on the menu! Check out the album's fabulous original artwork by SHAG from Supersonic Swingers and Bottomless Cocktail fame!

Next up we have the mix cd Ursadelica in which Ursula 1000 returns with his signature eclectic style mixing tracks from around the world that take you from jazzy breaks, mod freakbeats, latin movers, psychedelic soul shakers and bouncy electric disco stompers!
Currently locked up in the studio, the new album of originals is taking shape and will be unleashed to the world early '05.
Dig it.
