The hills are alive with the sound of Valery's Kin. This Swedish anti-folk troupe brings a lo-fi edge to its world-music meanderings. Like the Pogues fronted by Devendra Banhart on a cloudy day, Valery's Kin has an infectious, organic sound that is utterly refreshing.
See how the slopes curve so lightly? See how the same bend is on every shoulder Of every man working the fields? See how the dirt have started to clothe them? That is the soil accepting the courtship of the hatchet And autumn seems to come earlier every year they live And sons soon yawn as their fathers have yawned all their working days It is age seeping through the muddy pores And age is the brother of death For the soil will bury its sons and daughters See how they all have their mothers hands? The same hands that failed to seize spring Now clasp the bottle and heave it By mid summer they are tying a rope around the branches of the ash Mother took him in her wooden hand And held him up till he did not kick any more One less mouth to feed but two hands missing around the axe For every good year a bad year is forgotten But some years there is long before one can forget Pale years, skin clasping thight around hungry eyes See how the dance whirls so madly in the light of flames? Sacrifice is a privileged duty See how they all have their mothers cruel, determined eyes? Watching a virgin loose her innocence to licking flames Faith as in believing what your hands can do for her soil Belief as in trusting what her soil will do for you Next year the stems are strong in the wheat field They slash hard at bare knees She is watching Be it stray pigs or wild boar Don t tread where you don t belong - P.
