Joe Williams, the rowdy 24 year old behind White Williams, started playing music at a young age in Cleveland's DIY scene where he was exposed to a party lifestyle of fires, noise bands, art and performance. He played and booked shows and parties with a small group of musicians and artists, including Greg Gillis (Girl Talk), Frank Musarra (Trey Told 'Em) and Luke Venezia (Drop the Lime).
Leading to the creation of White Williams' debut album, Smoke, Williams began gravitating more toward pop music and he became interested in learning about the way his favorite albums of the 70's and 80's were recorded. He was fascinated by the idea of re-contextualizing how to make music with the tools given. All of these ideas show up in the album. Recorded in various sublets over two years in Cleveland, Cincinnati, NY and San Francisco, Smoke is nostalgic, colorful, art pop, often loose, imperfect and ambiguous.
