Most post-rock seems downright allergic to good cheer, sticking to icy overtones and the architecture of gloom. Not Winter Equinox. The Ontario collective makes anthems in the broad-horizon mold of Godspeed or Stereolab, but its reverbed guitars and keyboard loops tend to brim with euphoria, and the major key finally gets let of its cage.
Winter Equinox is a mainly instrumental quartet that creates music with elements of post-rock, electronic, glitch, and experimental sounds. The band places an emphasis on heavily layered arrangements to create intense soundscapes, combined with occasional lyrical melodies and catchy bass grooves. The group consists of Lauren Yakiwchuk, Robyn Yakiwchuk, Dan Roberts, and Brad Weber. Lauren and Robyn are sisters from Dundas, Ontario, while Dan and Brad are from Waterloo, Ontario.
Winter Equinox utilizes a wide variety of instruments such as keyboards, bass, guitar, drums, percussion, flute, clarinet, melodica, and programmed rhythms to define their sound. The band takes influences from artists such as Tortoise, Do Make Say Think, Mogwai, Caribou, Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky, The Notwist, M83, and Boards of Canada.
The skills and talents that these four members possess make Winter Equinox a unique and alluring listening experience. Members of the band are both classically-trained and influenced by jazz and rock music, which makes for a highly creative integration of sounds and styles.
Since their formation in May 2004, Winter Equinox has established themselves within many cities in Ontario. They have performed across the province, including venues in Toronto, Hamilton, Guelph, North Bay, Kingston, Brantford, Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Port Dover, and Stratford. Notably, the band was invited to perform at Wavelength Magazine?s Music Series while being featured within their monthly issue. They have also played alongside such acts as The Organ and Matt Pond PA. Winter Equinox is a dedicated group of artists who play as often as possible, and continually write new material. The band is currently working on their debut album, scheduled for completion by mid-summer 2005.
