Madlib, the performer, DJ, and sound artist behind Yesterdays New Quintet, has been experimenting, composing, and performing with records and turntables since the early '90s. If you're a fan of jazz, funk, or anything avant-garde--hell, if you're a fan of music--check out Madlib's all-instrumental tribute to classic Stevie Wonder songs. This stuff cooks.
The quintet came together in Los Angeles at the urging of their sole producer and arranger, Madlib. With Madlib, the quintet has recorded hours of music, mostly in Stones Throw's Bomb Shelter studio. Exec producer Peanut Butter Wolf estimates that the quintet's debut LP Angles Without Edges was culled from 36 compact discs of music. Preferring to let the music speak for itself, the group maintains a high level of security, performs only rare and unannouced shows, and is never photographed together.
